March's Monthly Missive

Spring might be coming early if these warm temp's stick around. This is not really a problem but there are some things to watch for.

If the grass is turning green, then mow it. The cutting height will be the same as it is all year and I usually bag the first mowing because it is more of a cleanup trim. Then I go right back to mulching. If there is a cold snap in March the freshly mown grass will go off color (a gray-purple) but it will green back up as soon as it warms back up.

Don't fertilize early, wait for the regular schedule. If a cold snap comes along and there is extra N, there can be problems. If the grass had the regular fall fert, there is plenty of N until the regular schedule starts.

The one thing to watch is crabgrass control. If the soil temps get between 45 and 50 and stay there, the pre-emergent has to go on. If that is a month early then the chemical will lose its active a month earlier and a second application will be needed. If the nights stay cold enough to offset the warm days then the weed grasses will wait. The soil temps are posted on our web site.

If the crabgrass control goes on early then make sure to aerify before putting it down. It does no good to put down a barrier to weed grasses and then punch holes in it. We are doing our aerifying in the next week.

Bluegrass sod (Ideal Sod is a mix) will be struggling to turn green because of the cold nights. Yet, the soil temps can still call for crabgrass control and thus early aerification. If you are in maintenance, then you will need to practice a sales pitch because customers don't tend to understand an early bill.

A warm March, without wind, would be really rare but maybe............. Daffodils and tulips are coming up and the grass is really green. Fishing is picking up and golf courses are turning green so life is starting over again.
